Map · Rivers, lakes and the sea floorThe Usumacinta and the Grijalva form the largest river system of Mesoamerica; the Motagua and the Hondo run to the Caribbean. The peninsula has almost no rivers: the rain sinks into the limestone and comes back to light in the cenotes. Offshore, the shallow Campeche Bank faces the Cayman Trough, more than 7,000 m deep, and the Mesoamerican Reef follows the coast of Quintana Roo and Belize. 98°W96°W94°W92°W90°W88°W86°W84°W82°W80°W14°N16°N18°N20°N22°N Pacific Ocean Gulf of Mexico Caribbean Sea Campeche Bank Cayman Trough Middle America Trench Bay of Campeche Gulf of Honduras Gulf of Tehuantepec Mesoamerican Reef Land of cenotes Yucatán Channel Laguna de Términos Laguna de Bacalar Chixoy Lake Izabal Presa de la Angostura Presa Nezahualcóyotl Lake Atitlán Laguna Atasta Lake Petén Itzá Lake Yojoa Lake Ilopango San Pedro y San Pablo Salinas Usumacinta Lempa Grijalva Cuilco Ulúa Coatzacoalcos Motagua Chacte Tzanconeja Hondo La Sierra Tacotaipa La Venta Suchiapa San Gregorio Lacantún Uxpanapa Sarstún Polochic Higuito Aguán Candelaria Jicatuyo Grijalva Laguna de Pueblo Viejo Laguna Chil Presa Manuel vila Camacho Presa Miguel Alemán Laguna de Wouhnta Laguna Mara Lizamba Laguna El Salado Laguna Chila Laguna de Ibans Lake Tecocomulco Lake Texcoco Laguna Totolcingo Lake Catemaco Santo Domingo Hondo Uxpanapa Sarstún Polochic Humuya Polochic Coco Verde Pnuco Balsas Grande de Matagalpa Papaloapan Moctezuma Atoyac Quiechapa Patuca Sinecapa Kukalaya Quetzala Calabazas Tecolutla Jamapa Santo Domingo Tehuantepec Sarabia El Corte Chiflón Humuya Choluteca Tuma Nexapa Amacuzlac Pantepec Cazones Pescados Blanco Grande Salado Verde Patuca Kukalaya El Salto Choluteca Aguán Tuma 0180 km Cartography: Bibliothécaire Joséf Sánchez Coach · © 2026 · Relief: NASA
